According to a Practical Guide to Distributed Scrum, there are 7 rules for these teams:
- Don’t treat distributed teams as local;
- Don’t treat local teams as distributed;
- Latitude hurts, longitude kills;
- Don’t be always remote;
- Invest in the right tools;
- Establish agreements and norms.
We can’t always avoid working on virtual teams, actually, this can be the situation on most of the companies, due to specific technical skills requirements or clients that are supported 24 hours/7 days a week.
Therefore, how to ensure we treat these teams accordingly to become Agile?
Let’s set the following 3 best practices:
First of all, establish a social contract, based on the company and team values defined (see the last post).
Second, try to find a time where all team members are online to talk, normally in between shifts or a time where timezone matches;
And last, encourage the use of collaboration tools, specially the visual ones, as Mural, Zoom, Trello and Slack.
