This is a very common question on Agile trainings. When teams are used to one hour status meetings, even the idea of a 15 min daily meeting may seem unnecessary.

This is why the first step for Agile transformation is the mindset change. If each person gets the assigned work to him and go to his desk, he is not working as a real team, but only as a group of people with related activities.

The most important points for any team, virtual or local, are communication and visibility and this can be achieved with daily stand up meetings.

Besides the three questions to direct the meeting:

  1. What have I done yesterday?
  2. What will I do today?
  3. What are my impediments?

There are some tips to help teams to see the value of daily stand up meetings:

  • Use a Kanban board or wall of work to keep work visible and help communication to go faster;
  • Have any project tools the team is working opened;
  • Use video tools for virtual teams, it’s fun to see everyone in the team!

Remember: the daily stand up must be strategic, to set the daily goals and align the team towards them. The stand up needs to be a place for the team to ask and offer help, receive and provide feedback, iterate, adjust and continuos learn.
